Our core industries:
Paper industry
At Skelv, we care about planet Earth’s natural resources, so our main business is collection and transport of paper and cardboard waste to paper mills, which recycle this waste and convert it into a new product. That’s why working with the paper industry is so important to us.
Skelv not only supplies paper and cardboard waste to paper mills but also offers services of transporting finished products from paper mills to printing houses, manufacturers of corrugated board packaging and end customers using standard and mega trailer sets.
Paper transportation standards involve a strong impact of quality and environmental standards. Any dirt or small objects can damage sensitive rolls or finished pulp and paper products. The main features of paper products are hygroscopicity and temperature sensitivity. Changes in humidity and temperature fluctuations change the colour, texture and strength of paper products. If the moisture level exceeds the acceptable standard, paper and cardboard swell and become heavier, crumple and curl. To prevent any damage to the cargo during transportation, additional protection is used, including floor mats, additional covers, special corners, as well as a special method of product stacking during transport.
Fishing industry – fish processing
One of Skelv’s core businesses is management of animal by-products from fish processing. These by-products include fish heads, skins, spines, entrails. Animal by-products are collected by us and transported to waste processing facilities, which use them to produce fish meal.
Fish meal is a commonly used source of highly valuable protein and is used in feed production. The fishing industry is also important to us as the client for our refrigerated transport services, where cargo needs to be transported in a temperature-controlled environment.
Our transportation services involve supplying the production process with raw materials, semi-finished products, auxiliary materials, as well as transporting finished products from production facilities to distribution hubs of retail chains and food wholesalers.
Chemicals and building materials industry
Transporting products of the construction chemicals sector by road requires much more caution than when transporting other materials.
Transportation of construction materials is a specific type of transportation. It needs both good planning, the right type of transportation, precision and the right forms of securing the cargo being transported.
We arrange transportation for manufacturers and importers of construction materials. We deliver building materials to distributors and warehouses.
Waste management
Waste management is the sector of particular importance to us. Skelv offers waste collection services from waste collection facilities, transport of that waste, using Skelv’s own fleet as well as with the help of trusted carriers, to waste treatment facilities where waste including recyclable waste is recycled or disposed of.
With our thorough knowledge of environmental regulations we know how to follow the basic rules of waste transportation as dictated by law and we offer waste transportation services to many well-known corporations in this sector of the economy.
Waste transport rules:
- hazardous waste can be transported along with other type of waste, as long as contact between these two types of waste is prevented,
- during waste transportation, mixing of different types of waste should be prevented,
- during waste transportation, waste must not spread beyond the means of transport (in particular, dumping, dusting, leakage),
- odour nuisance during waste transportation should be kept to a minimum,
- the impact of atmospheric factors on waste must be minimised if it causes negative impact of waste on the environment or human life and health,
- waste (in particular in containers or bags) should be arranged or fixed on the means of transport in such a way as to prevent displacement and overturning, unless transported in bulk or in tanks,
- when the type of transported waste changes, it is mandatory to make sure before transportation that the means of transport contains no residues from the previous transport of waste (whenever such residues may affect the properties of the transported waste in such a way as to pose risk to the environment or human life and health).
On top of that, waste must be transported with a document confirming:
- type of waste transported,
- data of the client of waste transport.
The means of transport should be properly marked. The obligation applies to the means of transportation which are vehicles or a combination of vehicles. Such means of transportation must be marked with a white board with the word “WASTE” affixed in large black letters. The Regulation of the Minister of Environment precisely defines the dimensions of the board (400 mm wide and 300 mm high) as well as the letters (minimum hight 100 mm and minimum line width 15 mm). The regulation also covers the situation where there is not enough space on the means of transportation to place a board conforming with these dimensions. The board can be then reduced in size (minimum width 300 mm and minimum height 120 mm) and so can be the inscription (minimum height 80 mm and minimum line width 12 mm). This derogation is justified by the size or design of the means of transportation.
The marking should be placed in a visible place at the front of the means of transport, on its external surface, and should be legible, durable and weatherproof. The Annex (No. 1) to the Regulation defines a graphic design of such marking.
In the case of transborder waste shipments, if the means of transportation (being either a vehicle or a combination of vehicles) are intended for transborder waste shipments, they can be labelled in a different way. The board (with dimensions as above) must carry capital letter “A” in black with a minimum height of 200 mm and a minimum line width of 20 mm. In addition, labelling conditions apply as for means of “ordinary” waste transportation.
